Toronto’s Garment Unions: Threads of Unity and Discord explores the complex history of Toronto’s garment industry and the Jewish workers who helped shape it.
From the bustling factory floors of Spadina Avenue to the crowded meeting halls of early union organizers, the exhibition traces how immigrant communities, many of them Jewish newcomers, fought for fair wages, safer conditions, and dignity in their work. Through photographs, personal letters, union banners, and oral histories, visitors encounter the human stories behind one of the city’s most transformative labour movements.
The exhibition also reveals the internal tensions that tested these movements, such as divisions over gender, religion, and ideology that mirrored the wider social changes of the time. Visitors are invited to reflect on how collective action and conflict together wove the fabric of modern Toronto, leaving a legacy of activism that continues to inspire today’s movements for workers’ rights and social justice.
